lo aaj ham ne tod diya rishta-e-ummeed
lo ab kabhi gila na karenge kisi se ham
- sahir ludhianvi
Ah! today we have severed any connection with hope
We shall now refrain to complain to no one specified
- trans. Khwaja Tariq Mahmood, Poems of Sahir Ludhanvi
The first line he has translated well, but the second line he unfortunately messes up because of certain obstacles he creates for himself.
Am concurrently reading Poems of Sahid Ludhianvi, Urdu Ghazals: An Anthology, and Mirza Ghalib: A Biographical Scenario. Each writer/editor/translation approaches the task of translation differently, with very instructive results. Will try and write about it some day.
suggested alternate last line:
We will not lament our fate to others again
