love, wine, despair, death

I had briefly touched upon the thabri-nama earlier, and mentioned how the main themes of the poet's work were love, wine, despair, death.

I have since been re-reading my (19th century english translation) copy of the text and doing some research, and have made some interesting discoveries. The four lines prefacing each section of the book also combine to form a rubai that summarises the thabri-nama, as well as unlocking the inter-relationship between the four themes. Without further ado then:

love - we thought to find happiness in romance
wine - then sought solace in alcoholic trance
despair - but every pleasure hid greater sorrow
death - now all hope rests with Shiva's dance
